Mobile phones could eventually adopt a new form of advertising: pop-up ads. Targeted advertising companies Mobile Posse and Acuity Mobile are working to provide pop-up advertisements to mobile phone users that don't depend on the use of a mobile browser, expanding the reachable audience by tens of millions of users. This would then allow the ads to show up at any time, not just when the user is browsing the Internet.

I have made a small angel investment in this cool new company, Mobile Posse. It is a company founded by Jon Jackson, a former AOL and MTV executive, and it too employs several AOL alumni.

I have made a small angel investment in this cool new company, Mobile Posse. It is a company founded by Jon Jackson, a former AOL and MTV executive, and it too employs several AOL alumni. My good friend Jack Davies, founder of AOL International and a partner in our sports franchises, sits on their board. Raul Fernandez is also heavily involved.

After a successful trial run with its partner Revol Wireless Inc., Mobile Posse Inc. - which puts promotions and other content on idle cell-phone screens - this week brings its product to market, hoping the momentum will lead to a successful fund-raising round and further expansion.

The product rollout is limited to Cleveland, Indianapolis and surrounding areas. But Mobile Posse executives say they have gotten strong interest from two "Tier 1" carriers, which they declined to name.
