IDC's top 10 are said to punch above their weight By Mickey Alam Khan Market researcher IDC has identified 10 mobile companies with the potential this year to impact the market disproportionate to their current size. Boston Business Journal - February 6, 2008 Market intelligence firm IDC has, in a new study, identified ten small mobile companies that may be poised to potentially play larger roles in the mobile industry, according to the study. Framingham, Mass.-based IDC, a division of IDG, a technology media, research and events company, has highlighted these companies in its 2008 report: Aegis Mobile, Enterprise Mobile, Gearworks, Hook Mobile, Inside Contactless, Medio, MFoundry, Mobile Posse, Mobilians and Vlingo.

View an ad, get a discount coupon By Kelly Hill Regional, flat-rate carrier Revol has started testing an advertising-supported wireless service that allows users to get a discount on their bills if they agree to receive content, advertising and promotional offers on their phones. Privately held Revol said it initially plans to trial the service, called Revol Perks, for 60 days for subscribers in Akron, Canton, Cleveland, Toledo and Youngstown, Ohio, as well as Indianapolis.

By Shaheen Samavati Revol Wireless customers in Northeast Ohio are helping test a new type of direct marketing. The regional wireless provider, based in Independence, recently partnered with Mobile Posse Inc. to bring targeted advertising to some customers' cell phone screens. Advertisers are eager for the chance to send messages directly to the "idle screens" of cell phone users nationwide. But most U.S. wireless carriers have so far been reluctant to embrace the idea for fear of alienating consumers.

By Jacqui Cheng Mobile phones could eventually adopt a new form of advertising: pop-up ads. Targeted advertising companies Mobile Posse and Acuity Mobile are working to provide pop-up advertisements to mobile phone users that don't depend on the use of a mobile browser, expanding the reachable audience by tens of millions of users. This would then allow the ads to show up at any time, not just when the user is browsing the Internet.

By Timothy Hay After a successful trial run with its partner Revol Wireless Inc., Mobile Posse Inc. - which puts promotions and other content on idle cell-phone screens - this week brings its product to market, hoping the momentum will lead to a successful fund-raising round and further expansion. The product rollout is limited to Cleveland, Indianapolis and surrounding areas. But Mobile Posse executives say they have gotten strong interest from two "Tier 1" carriers, which they declined to name.
