Pets, like babies, use their mouths to investigate their surroundings. While we love rewarding our fur babies with treats, certain human foods should be avoided at all costs.
Swipe to learn about dangerous human foods your pet should never eat!
Avacados
Avocados are most dangerous to birds, rabbits, donkeys, horses, sheep and goats. The most serious risk is cardiovascular disease and mortality in birds and rabbits.
Xylitol
Xylitol is a sweetener used in gum, candy, baked goods and toothpaste. It can trigger insulin release in most pets, leading to liver failure. Toxicosis symptoms such as vomiting, tiredness, and lack of coordination can occur.
Yeast Dough
Raw yeast dough might cause a very uncomfortable gas buildup in our pet's digestive tract. That gas can cause the stomach to bulge and twist, potentially resulting in a life-threatening emergency. A dog who consumes uncooked dough might also become intoxicated as a byproduct of the yeast.
Salty Snack Foods
Excessive thirst, urine and sodium ion toxicity can occur in dogs after consuming large amounts of salty food. Treats such as potato chips, pretzels and salted popcorn should be avoided at all costs.
Onions
Certain vegetables, like onions, can irritate the gastrointestinal tract and induce red blood cell damage and anemia in dogs and cats. Although cats are more vulnerable, dogs are also at risk of major illness if enough onion is ingested.
Coconuts
Fresh coconut flesh and milk contain oils that can induce stomach distress and diarrhea. Coconut water has a high potassium concentration and should not replace the plain water in your pet's bowl.
Chocolate
Chocolate is extremely toxic to dogs and cats, and ingesting enough could prove to be fatal. It includes caffeine and theobromine, which can induce vomiting and diarrhea, and cause seizures. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is for your pet.
Mushroom Plants
If a dog consumes wild mushrooms, handle the situation as an emergency. Depending on the type and amount consumed, mushrooms can induce renal and liver failure and neurological symptoms. Although most mushroom species don't represent a threat it's hard to tell which ones are dangerous, so always exercise caution.
