Sept. 17 (UPI) -- New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields is in the concussion protocol and will not play Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, coach Aaron Glenn announced Wednesday.
"When it comes to injuries, one person that I think I'll say is out right now would be Justin," Glenn told reporters. "He is still going through his protocol. So he will be out."
Fields sustained the concussion in the fourth quarter of the Jets' 30-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J. The back of Fields' head hit the ground when he was sacked by Bills pass rusher Joey Bosa.
Fields completed 3 of 22 passes for 27 yards and ran for 49 yards before his immediate exit. He was replaced by veteran backup Tyrod Taylor, who completed 7 of 11 passes for 56 yards and a score.
Fields will start in Week 3.
"There is an element in him that we also have in Justin that I like a lot," Glenn said of Taylor. "The fact that he's been in this league for a long time. There is no coverage, no pressure that he hasn't seen. That's why I have confidence in him."
Fields completed 19 of 33 (57.6%) of his passes for 245 yards and one score through his first two starts of the season. He also ran for 97 yards and two scores for the Jets.
Taylor completed 17 of 22 passes (77.3%) of his throws for 119 yards and three scores over two appearances last season for the Jets. The 15-year veteran completed 61.9% of his throws for 12,310 yards, 69 yards and 29 interceptions over his first 95 NFL appearances. He holds a 28-28-1 record as a starter.
Quarterback Brady Cook, who is on the Jets' practice squad, is expected to be promoted to the active roster in Week 3. The Jets will play the Buccaneers at 1 p.m. EDT Sunday in Tampa, Fla.
