Secret Islands You're Missing Out On

Secret Islands You're Missing Out On

From Nicaragua to Seychelles, there are islands that are visited so rarely they’ll feel like a secret getaway. With pristine beaches and few tourists, these seven islands offer all the makings of a perfect vacation — outdoor activities, spas, drop-dead gorgeous locations and, most importantly, seclusion.

Check out these top seven secret islands and be ready to pack your bags and keep the secret.

Holbox Island, Mexico

Not only is this immaculate island far from the tourists that flock to Mexico all year round, but it’s also the perfect location for wildlife lovers. With herds of flamingos and pelicans, the island is also rich with marine life, complete with schools of sharks and flotillas of sea turtles.

Culebra, Puerto Rico

Located off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico is this 11-square-mile island with multiple crescents of seemingly untouched, sandy white beaches. The turquoise, clear water displays the reefs below the surface. If you’re looking for an exotic getaway closer to home, this is a strong contender.

Jicaro Island, Nicaragua

Just off the mainland in Lake Cocibolca you’ll find one of many close-quartered islands. Jicaro is so small it only has one hotel, but the outdoor activities are endless. Go kayaking, hiking or go in search of the 87 native bird species to the area, but don’t expect to spend much time online as the WiFi is essentially nonexistent.

Desroches Island, Seychelles

Part of the outer islands of Seychelles, this nearly untouched paradise is just over three miles long. While there is one five-star resort on the island, this tropical wonderland would also make a great day trip from Mahé, the main island.

Skopelos, Greece

You’ve likely heard of Santorini, Crete, Mykonos and Corfu, but don’t forget Greece has more than 200 inhabited islands to choose from. If you’re looking for someplace just as charming but less touristy, Skopelos should be at the top of the list. While more difficult to get to, the magnificent vistas and lack of tourists will pay off in the end.

Scrub Island, BVI

In the British Virgin Islands is this lesser-known stunner comprised of volcanic rock and coral. This highly mountainous island historically was uninhibited, but when the Scrub Island Resort opened its doors in 2010 it soon became a desired vacation destination. Due to the island's size, a visit will still feel like a remote getaway, despite its increasing popularity.

Desert Island, UAE

Escape the hustle and bustle of Dubai and Abu Dhabi and instead head to Desert Islands. A tranquil escape, this stunning destination is comparable to islands in Southeast Asia or the Caribbean. It’s wise to stay away in the summer though unless you want to become a lobster because temperatures can easily exceed 100 degrees.
